Choosing a charger

Which charger suits you

All new home chargers in the UK must be smart chargers. That means you can schedule charging for cheaper overnight electricity and control it from your phone.

7 kW · tethered

Cable attached

The cable stays on the charger, so you just plug in. The most convenient choice for one car.

7 kW · untethered

Socket only

A tidier look on the wall. You use the cable that came with your car. Good if you might change cars.

7 kW · solar-ready

Charges from solar

Uses spare power from your solar panels to charge the car before anything goes back to the grid.

Most homes have a single-phase supply, which tops out at about 7 kW. 22 kW chargers need a three-phase supply, which few houses have.

FAQs

Common questions

How long does a home charger installation take?

Most installations are done in half a day. Longer cable runs, or work on the consumer unit, can take a full day.

Do I need to upgrade my fuse or consumer unit?

Often not. We check your main fuse and consumer unit during the survey. Most chargers have load management that slows charging when the house is using a lot of power, which usually avoids an upgrade.

Can I charge from my solar panels?

Yes, with a solar-compatible charger. It can top up the car using surplus solar power that would otherwise be exported.

Is there a grant for a home charger?

Government grants for home chargers are mainly aimed at people who live in flats or rent. Schemes change, so we check what you qualify for when we quote.

Do you cover my area?

We're based in East Grinstead and cover Sussex, Surrey, Kent and South London, including Crawley, Horsham, Haywards Heath, Brighton, Tunbridge Wells, Sevenoaks, Maidstone, Dartford, the Medway towns, Reigate, Croydon and Bromley.
